Texas ranchers suffer $152 million in wildfire losses (Reuters)

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) ? The wildfires that have roared across Texas in the past nine months have caused $152 million in direct losses to the state's farmers and ranchers, economists at Texas A&M University estimated on Wednesday.

The losses will continue to stack up, said Andy Vestal, director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Programs at the Texas Agri-Life Extension Service.

"Structures, equipment, livestock, fences, pasture, and timber continue to be lost on a daily basis, as fires continue to break out during this prolonged drought," Vestal said Wednesday.

The most significant loss for most has been the destruction of nearly 6,000 miles of agricultural fencing, enough to span the continent from the Atlantic ocean to the Pacific more than two and a half times.

Fencing is one of the biggest expenses of the farming and ranching industry.

The Agri-Life extension service reported the average cost of a four-to six-wire fence with steel posts, the most common type for plains ranchers, is about $10,000 per mile.

More than 1,500 horses, cattle, sheep, and goats have been killed by the wildfires, Vestal said. Some 198 agricultural structures have been destroyed, as well as assorted pieces of agricultural equipment, and 2.9 million acres of pasture land.

Some 3.7 million acres have burned in Texas since wildfire season began in November 2010, making it the most destructive in state history.

The losses cited by Texas A&M are those caused directly by the fires and are in addition to the $5.2 billion already suffered by the state's agricultural producers due to the year-long drought. The drought has dried up crops and forced the sale of entire herds of cattle because no grasslands still exist where they can graze.

As the losses continue to mount from the wildfires, the Texas Forest Service reported on Wednesday that the extreme wildfire danger that covers nearly the entire state will not ease any time soon. Firefighters will remain on hair-trigger alert at least through the end of this year, and possibly right through until next summer.

Justin Musgraves, regional fire coordinator for the Lubbock Region of the Texas Forest Service, told Reuters that was the news he was hoping not to hear.

"Typically there's a break between the spring, summer, and fall fire seasons, and this year it looks like we are going to keep on rolling, right on through the winter," he said.

Officials said wildfires in the winter have a tendency to be far more destructive, due mainly to dead vegetation. A record drought also is killing more and more trees, and the winds are stronger.

"With the winter comes the wind," Musgraves said. "With the wind will come bigger, more aggressive fires."

NJ police chief: Double-parking wife not above law

LODI, N.J. (AP) ? A New Jersey police chief says no one is above the law ? not even his wife.

Lodi (LOH'-deye) Police Chief Vincent Caruso ordered an officer to ticket his wife after she double parked while dropping off their 5-year-old son at school.

Caruso told The Record newspaper (http://bit.ly/pksv9y ) he didn't want her to get any special treatment because of who she is.

The chief paid the $54 ticket.

It's not the first time for Paula Caruso. The chief ordered another officer to ticket her two years ago after she forgot to move their vehicle for street cleaning.

The chief told the newspaper he loves his wife and she's very busy driving their four sons around.

His wife couldn't be reached for comment Thursday. The Carusos' phone number is unlisted.

DENVER (AP) ? Remember when Barack Obama first ran for president and people were really into him?

Obama remembers it, too, but not the same way some of his supporters do.

Bidding for re-election in tough economic times, Obama says there is some "revisionist history" going on about how great that first race was.

His strategy is to bring disillusioned supporters back into the fold by addressing their feelings of discouragement head-on and reminding them they signed up for something tough to begin with ? even if now they just remember the "hope" and "change" posters.

And he's telling them bluntly they will have to be even more determined and find different sources of inspiration this time around since he is not the fresh face.

"I'm grayer, I'm all dinged up," Obama told a Hollywood fundraiser crowd Monday night. "And those old posters everybody has got in their closet, they're all dog-eared and faded. And so the energy of 2008 is going to have to be generated in a different way."

The approach is one Obama almost has to take if he's to reconcile memories of his historic 2008 campaign with the dispiriting realities of governing a divided country amid a sagging economy and unemployment topping 9 percent.

On Tuesday, Obama was in Denver, the city where he accepted the Democratic presidential nomination three years ago before an adoring crowd of 80,000. Tuesday's event, a speech at a high school to promote his jobs plan, wasn't an attempt to recreate that spectacle or recapture that energy.

But the contrast did underscore how much harder it can be to inspire as president than as candidate. He was pushing a nearly $450 billion jobs plan that has little if any chance of getting through a divided Congress.

It's a far cry from three years ago in Denver when the president told the huge crowd, "It's time for us to change America."

Comments from people waiting to hear Obama speak Tuesday showed how much has changed.

"It doesn't feel the same. People aren't excited," said Adrienne Hernandez, 26, an electrical engineering student in Denver. "There's a lot of fear, a lot of anxiety. It's totally different."

Brooke White, 36, a professional blackjack dealer from Denver, said she was an Obama volunteer in 2008.

"I'll volunteer again, but I'm not as into it, I'll tell you that," White said. "I'm not so excited, I'm not as motivated. I worked so hard four years ago. I don't have the same motivation to get out there and work every single day like I did in '08."

It would have been tough for the realities of the Obama presidency, with its deal-making and compromises, to compete with the inspirations of the Obama campaign under the best of circumstances. He's encountered far from the best, with the tough economy and Republicans attacking him at every turn.

But for Obama, the disillusionment goes even deeper than the political reality that governing is harder and uglier than campaigning.

Obama's campaign was premised on the notion of uniting the country and changing the very way Washington worked. But that's something he's acknowledged he failed to do.

So now, as he asks voters to send him back to Washington for another four years, it's no longer as a potentially transformational figure campaigning for unity, but as a battle-scarred politician campaigning, as politicians do, against the opposition.

"He is, of course, like any savvy campaigner, trying to lower expectations and motivate the base by underscoring his need for and want of campaign energy," said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a senior fellow at the University of Southern California's School of Policy, Planning and Development.

Obama, with his approval ratings sinking into the 40s, appears to recognize as well as anyone the disconnect between the lofty rhetoric of then and the partisan reality of now. It helps explain why he finds himself needing to yank supporters out of wishful memories of the way things were.

Addressing supporters in a wealthy Seattle suburb Sunday night, Obama remarked of 2008: "There is a lot of revisionist history that says our campaign was perfect and we never had any problems, and it was all just the big 'hope' posters, and everybody was feeling good, Bruce Springsteen singing.

"That wasn't how it felt when I was in the middle of it," Obama said. "So this stuff is always hard. But this is going to be especially hard, because a lot of people are discouraged and a lot of people are disillusioned."

In fact, on the night he won election in 2008, Obama tried to caution even his most elated supporters to brace themselves for a hard period of governing.

"The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep," Obama said that night from Grant Park in Chicago. "We may not get there in one year or even one term."

This time around, he tells supporters, he will be focused on painting a clear contrast between his vision of America and the GOP approach, which he charged would "cripple" the country over the long term. That one pivot ? from campaigning on hope and unity to attacking the GOP ? sums up just how different things are this time around for Obama.

And yet, Obama is trying, too, not to abandon his initial message.

"All that 'hopey, changey stuff,' as they say, that was real," he said in New York last week, apparently referring to Sarah Palin's mocking criticism of his presidency. To supporters in Seattle, Obama added: "I hope that all of you end up, despite the ups and down inevitable in a campaign, that you guys will be just as excited on Inauguration Day of 2013 as you were inauguration day 2009."

10 Years Later, FDNY and NYPD in Radio Sync - WNYC

Since the September 11 attacks, New York City has committed hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade its 911 call system and its emergency radio communications to try and correct the inadequacies documented by the 9/11 Commission and other expert reviews.

A City Council panel wanted to know how far the Bloomberg administration had actually gotten on what was estimated to be a $2 billion dollar, multi-year effort, which has run into time delays and major cost overruns.

Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway told the City Council Tuesday that the city now has state of the art radio communications between the police and fire departments, which permits them to better coordinate their emergency response. He added the city had "become a model of voice interoperability, but we are leading the nation through the development of our state of the art wireless data network, built exclusively for the use of city agencies."

But Council Technology Committee chair Elizabeth Crowley said she's still concerned about gaps in radio communications in high rises and subways, settings that proved problematic on September 11.

"What this hearing? has indicated is that there are still unresolved problems, that the Fire Department and the administration has come along way? in the past ten years but there is still a ways to go," Crowley said in an interview after the hearing.

Public Safety Council Committee chair Peter Vallone was pleased by the amount of progress on the integration of the City's emergency services into a unified incident command. But he did raise concerns about the continued delay of the City's 911 center for the public's emergency calls, as well as a planned back-up system for 911 slated for the Bronx.

On September 11, people stranded on floors of the World Trade Center were not able to get useful and timely information from 911 operators on their best course of action. Under the Bloomberg administration's re-design FDNY and NYPD dispatching operations will be housed on the same floor which is expected to improve their collective situational awareness.

"One of the things they wanted to do was put all of the agencies on one floor of the command center so that there would be better coordination within 911 as to what was going on because everybody would be located in the same place," Vallone said. "That has yet to happen because of problems installing the technology."

City officials told Vallone that problems with the development of key software needed for the City's upgrade of its antiquated 911 call system had finally been resolved over the summer.

Holloway said that Verizon had delivered on its promise to work out glitches with the soft ware so the city can fully integrate police, fire and EMS dispatching.

"It has taken a long time; however, we were not going to switch over? to a new 911 system until we knew the new one was going to work," Holloway said

The Bloomberg administration now projects the new system will be fully operational in early November, after they train 911 employees and supervisors how to use it. As for the Bronx back-up system for 911, Holloway said a foundation had been poured and construction work continued, but he did not have a completion date.

Diabetics' coronary calcium levels strongly linked to heart attack risk

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2011) ? Notable levels of calcium buildup in coronary arteries can be strong predictors of heart attacks and strokes in people with diabetes and metabolic syndrome, according to a study led by UC Irvine's Heart Disease Prevention Program.

The researchers also found that individuals with diabetes or metabolic syndrome but no evidence of coronary calcium had cardiac-event risks as low as many without these conditions.

Supported by the National Institutes of Health, the multiethnic study of atherosclerosis involved 6,600 people ages 45 to 84. About 16 percent were diabetic (primarily type 2); another 25 percent had metabolic syndrome, a combination of disorders that can lead to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

The researchers wanted to know whether information from a heart scan for coronary calcium or an ultrasound of the neck's carotid artery could supplement standard factors -- high cholesterol, smoking, elevated blood pressure -- in assessing a person's chance of heart attack or stroke.

"Our study points out that there's a wide range in risk for cardiovascular consequences seen in persons with metabolic syndrome and diabetes and that screening of coronary calcium by heart scans -- and, to a lesser extent, carotid arteries by ultrasound -- may be helpful in picking out those most vulnerable," said Nathan Wong, UCI professor of medicine, director of the Heart Disease Prevention Program and senior author of the study.

"Our findings also suggest that individuals with significantly high levels of coronary calcium or carotid wall thickness should receive more aggressive monitoring and treatment for any associated risk factors," added co-author Dr. Shaista Malik, a UCI cardiologist.

These observations are consistent with guidelines released last year by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology recommending such screenings for diabetics 40 and older without known cardiovascular disease, as well as many people with metabolic syndrome.

So, you?re single and wondering about online dating. Or maybe you?re already trying it out and wanting to get more out of it. Possibly you?ve tried online dating before and are debating giving it another go.

While most provided stories and opinions from a relationship-seeker point of view, Sam provided insight and advice from a dating site operator vantage point. The discussion flows from one aspect of online dating and relationships to another.

Why did these folks try online dating? Reasons included living in a small town with few prospects; just moved to a new city and didn?t know a lot of people; never having a Christian date despite going to the ?biggest church in town;? all the girlfriends signed up together to check it out.

What expectations were there before trying online dating? Some expected to be dating right away! Turns out that?s not what materialized. It took time.

How does one stand out among the rest? A detailed profile was the consensus among the panel (?I like to read? versus ?The last novel I read was ____ and I loved it because ___?). When reading profiles, those who put a lot of time and thought into their profile answers were considered serious about finding a match. Profiles lacking in detail were overlooked by the panelists.

Sam mentioned that, while being an unromantic way to look at it, finding a match is similar to a job interview and the job search as a whole. You need to differentiate yourself in your profile as you?re essentially competing against others on the site. Further with the job search analogy, singles have to take the initiative! Get out there and get online instead of waiting (just as you would if you were unemployed ? sending out resumes and networking). Sam encouraged women to not be wallflowers and be fine with taking the initiative and starting conversations with men. The rejection rate is high, but such is the case with many things: sales, sports, etc?

When searching an online dating site do you limit yourself geographically? Sam suggests not to ? trust God instead to guide you in your search.

Sean Maher, Veteran Actor, Comes Out as Gay

Sean Maher, best known for roles on Firefly, Make It or Break It and now The Playboy Club, is gay. The actor made the admission today in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"It’s so liberating. It was interesting to be coming to have a conversation that I was always afraid to have," Maher tells the magazine, adding: "This is my coming out ball. I’ve been dying to do this.”

Maher lives in Los Angeles with a partner named Paul. The couple has two kids, Sophia Rose, 4, and Liam Xavier, 14 months.

The 36-year old actor says he was never asked about his sexuality in the past, but painted "a different picture" than the truth whenever the topic was remotely broached.

“I’m 22, I move to L.A., and it’s such a cliché, but the day I arrive, publicists from the show took me out to The Ivy for lunch,” he says. “They’re telling me, ‘You know, gosh, we’d really appreciate it if you could keep your girlfriend on the side because we want to appeal to the female demographic of the show.’”

Maher was afraid to come out over the years because he wanted to get leading man roles, saying:

“I’m thinking, What is the potential that if they caught wind that they had cast a gay lead actor that they would fire me? I was young, I was 22. I didn’t know anything. So that sort of started the idea of, okay, well, I’m working a lot, I guess I’ll just keep that gay part of my life on the back burner for now. I went so far as to sleep with women a couple times. It was a very confusing time for me.”

But remaining in the closer was so "exhausting and miserable," Maher concludes, and his role on The Playboy Club - in which he actually play a closeted married man - finally made this decision easy.

“I was working on other stuff, and then this role came up, which was like a light bulb going off. I was like, This is perfect. I want to do this, and I want to use it as a platform to come out.”

NFL memo warns teams on faking injuries (AP)

NEW YORK ? To the fake handoff and fake field goals, add fake injuries. The NFL sent a memo Wednesday to all 32 teams warning of fines, suspensions and loss of draft picks if the league determines players faked injuries during a game. Yet several players admit its an accepted practice, and some coaches hinted they are not above condoning phony injuries if it provides a competitive edge.

"I've been places where it has been (taught)," said Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, a member of the players' union executive committee. "They have a name for it and I've been places where it's been pre-called. I've been places where it's one player who has been designated. Maybe I'm getting everyone in trouble, but I'm just being honest."

In the memo obtained by The Associated Press, the NFL reminded teams of league policy that calls on coaches to discourage the practice. There is no specific rule on the topic.

Nonetheless, two days after there was speculation the Giants' Deon Grant faked an injury against the Rams during Monday night's game, the NFL is warning of disciplinary action.

"It's always been in the game," Ravens All-Pro safety Ed Reed said. "It's all tactical stuff you need to use. Whatever it takes. ... If you're tired, you're tired. You get a break however you can."

Added 49ers running back Frank Gore: "Hey, I feel if it helps, do it. I'm bound to do it. Whatever it takes to win ..."

Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said Tuesday the team notified the league office that it suspected the Giants were feigning injuries in St. Louis' 28-16 loss. Rams quarterback Sam Bradford said it was obvious the Giants were just buying time with St. Louis running a no-huddle offense.

"They couldn't get subbed, they couldn't line up," Bradford said. "Someone said, 'Someone go down, someone go down,' so someone just went down and grabbed a cramp."

Grant was adamant about not having faked anything.

"I could see if I was walking and fell," he said Wednesday, speaking passionately and barely taking a breath. "When you see after I made that tackle and bang my knee on that play, you see me bending my knee as I am walking. ... (Teammate Justin) Tuck is walking behind me and saying 'D don't run off the field. Just go down.' As I am walking, they line up, and knowing that I can't get back in my position because of the knee injury, I went down."

Had Grant attempted to get off the field, it could have left the Giants a defender short when the ball was snapped. Of course, New York also could have called a timeout, a course of action teams might need to use in the future.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan was coy about the tactic when asked if he ever instructed a defense to do it.

"I can't say I have," Shanahan said before pausing. "But I won't say I haven't, either."

Then he smiled.

"It happens all the time, and warnings will come out," he added, "and it's happened again."

The memo from the league said:

"Going forward, be advised that should the league office determine that there is reasonable cause, all those suspected of being involved in faking injuries will be summoned promptly to this office ... to discuss the matter. Those found to be violators will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action for conduct detrimental to the game."

The league's competition committee often has discussed this issue but has been reluctant to propose a rule that could force game officials to make judgments on injuries.

"We have been fortunate that teams and players have consistently complied with the spirit of the rule over the years and this has not been an issue for the NFL," the memo said. "We are determined to take all necessary steps to ensure that it does not become an issue."

For the most part, such delay tactics have been considered gamesmanship, similar to a hockey goalie suddenly needing equipment repairs when his team is getting besieged. Or untouched soccer players writhing on the ground in pain to get a stoppage ? and to slow momentum built by the other side.

"As an offensive player, you always think guys are faking in that situation," Eagles guard Kyle DeVan said. "But you don't know for sure. You don't know when guys are going to cramp up, so you have to be careful. The most important thing is players' health. You would hope guys don't do it, but it's going to happen."

It might be planned, too.

While calling it "real bush league" ? no pun intended ? Dolphins running back Reggie Bush said a coach "just designates a guy who fakes an injury. It's usually not a captain of the team. It's a guy who's expendable."

The NFL's disciplinarians will be watching for that.
