Green Blog: Court Faults E.P.A.'s Biofuels Mandate

A federal appeals court has thrown out part of the Environmental Protection Agency?s biofuels mandate, saying that it was based on a wishful assessment of how much cellulosic fuel could be produced.

So far, producers have had a hard time generating the volume that would be needed to meet the cellulosic fuel quota set for refiners, which is part of an effort by the Obama administration to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Cellulosic fuel is generated from agricultural waste and even household garbage through a process using bacteria, catalysts and the digestive juices of microorganisms.

The text of the ruling is here.

Topless protesters take on elite Davos forum

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Three women angry over sexism and male domination of the world economy ripped off their shirts and tried to force their way into a gathering of corporate elites in a Swiss resort.

Predictably, they failed. The ubiquitous and huge security force policing the World Economic Forum in Davos carried the women away, kicking and screaming.

The women, from Ukrainian feminist activist group Femen, scaled a fence and set off pink flares in the protest Saturday. Their chests were painted with "SOS Davos," as they sought to call attention to poverty of women around the world.

Critics of the Davos forum say the business and political leaders at the gathering spend too little time doing concrete things to solve the world's problems and help the needy.

P53 mutation hinders cancer treatment response

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Scientists from the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) have discovered the workings of the gene that has been hindering treatment response in cancer patients. This discovery was made after 5 years of studying the mutant form of the p53 gene, the major tumor suppressor in humans, which is generally found mutated in over 50% of all type of human cancers.

The dominant-negative (DN) effect of the mutant p53 gene in cancers was found to affect the outcome of cancer treatment modalities. DN effect is a phenomenon whereby one copy of mutant p53 that exists in cancer cells inhibits the tumor suppressor activity of the other wild-type p53 copy when they co-exist. The result is that a patient may either have poor response or earlier relapse of tumours after their treatment.

The research findings is significant in that it offers hope to improve cancer treatment outcomes by selectively inhibiting mutant p53's DN effect through several methods by generating selective and specific inhibitory molecules specific for some of the common hot-spot p53 point mutations. There are currently no drugs or compounds that can alleviate DN effects of mutant p53.

In order to understand the specific roles of mutant p53 DN properties in regulating acute treatment response and long-term tumourgenesis, a team of five researchers led by NCCS Prof Kanaga Sabapathy, the Principal Investigator in the Laboratory of Carcinogenesis and Head of the Division of Cellular & Molecular Research from NCCS, carried out experiments by generating genetically engineered knock-in mouse strains expressing varying levels of mutant p53. The results showed that DN effect is observed after acute p53 activation by a variety of chemotherapeutic drugs and irradiation, thereby affecting anti-cancer treatment. This breakthrough came after five years of intensive research.

It was found that mutant p53 have DN effects in a cell-type and dose-dependent manner, especially during acute p53 activation where p53 levels are elevated. Based on the above observations, efforts to generate specific inhibitors for the common hot spot p53 point mutations are underway. The inhibition of mutant p53 expression in cells carrying a wild-type and mutant p53 alleles can improve response to chemotherapeutic drugs.

In a further study, the researchers also questioned the possibility of the mutant p53 acquiring new functions (or Gain of Function) to drive carcinogenesis, transforming normal cells to cancerous cells. Their investigation comparing cells from genetically engineered mouse strains expressing 2 different types of p53 mutations: the R172H mutation versus the R246S mutation, which showed that Gain of Function (GOF) was found only in the former. This showed that GOF of mutated p53 is specifically dependent on mutation-type but not across all kinds of genetic mutations, highlighting diversity in properties of the different types of p53 mutations, thereby indicating that mutations found in human cancers can behave differently, and thus, need to be carefully assessed prior to treatment.

Thus, the existence of mutant p53 certainly has a negative impact on cancer treatment, whether it is through DN effect or GOF. Prof Sabapathy said that the team is now embarking on more research to determine the possibility of targeting mutant p53 without affecting wild-type p53 in human cells, paving way to clinical trials in the future to test the efficacy on cancer therapeutic response.

The research was supported by grants from the National Medical Research Council of Singapore and the Singapore Millennium Foundation to KS. The publication has been accepted and published by Cell Press, publisher of biomedical journals, in the journal Cancer Cell, on Dec. 10, 2012. Prof Sabapathy also teaches at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School.

Cold weather perfect for grape harvest

CLEVELAND - So, what were you doing during last night's deep freeze? Hopefully, keeping warm indoors.

Well, Folks at Ferrante Winery , in Geneva, were out in the vineyards harvesting wine grapes.

Nick Ferrante has waited all winter for just this kind of weather. Every year, he sets aside several acres of Vidal wine grapes and leaves the clusters hanging on the vine. Once the temperatures drop into the teens, the grapes freeze. Once the grapes freeze, it's time to make one of Ohio's premier beverages: ice wine.

?Tonight?s the right night," said Nicholas Ferrante, winemaker at the Ashtabula County winery. ?I made the decision to allow the grapes to hang until colder temperatures created a solid freeze.?

To make the best ice wine, you've gotta have it cold. Temperatures in the middle and upper teens are best.

Most of the water left in each berry will freeze, but the sugars and other flavors will not. The winemakers rush to press the grapes while they are still frozen. This results in pure, undiluted flavors and high sugar content, with very little water in the mix. That's the perfect ingredients for ice wine.

But when to harvest is the question. Most Ohio wineries harvested their ice wine grapes back in December during the brief holiday cold spell.

"I didn't think it was quite cold enough back then," Ferrante said.

This decision to wait did not come without consequences. Each day on the vine cuts down on the yield. The grapes actually shrivel up like raisins as the they slowly dry out during the fall. Netting around the vines attempts to keep animals from enjoying the sweet fruit. But, deer and raccoons still manage to snack through the netting.

Despite the lower yield in fruit, allowing the grapes to hang on the vine even longer concentrates the flavors and increases the sugar content of each berry. The result is a sweet, incredibly delicious, dessert wine.

Last night, the harvesters battled wind chills below zero and heavy snow squalls. But, the efforts were worth it.

"Brix (percent of sugar in each grape) soared into the high 40s," said winery owner MaryJo Ferrante. "It was amazing to be with the winery guys and see firsthand how it's done. It gives me a renewed appreciation of the art of ice wine making."

Once the grapes were pressed, the resulting liquid was immediately poured into the fermenters. The shivering workers harvested between eight and 10 tons of grapes. Although, that may sound like a lot, its really not.

"That will only produce about 300 gallons of ice wine," Nick said.

The picked fruit averaged about 35 percent sugar overall. The resulting wine will be about 15 percent sugar after fermentation.?

"Vidal blanc ice wine is a much sought-after dessert wine," MaryJo said. "(It has) rich aromas of apricot and orange blossoms with flavors of honey and ripe melon."

The wine will be bottled in the spring. Several other northern Ohio wineries produce ice wine. The 10th Annual Grand River Valley Ice Wine Festival will be held during the weekends of March 2, 9 and 16 from noon to 5 p.m. at participating wineries in the Grand River Valley region.

School brings in high-powered assault weapons

One of the 14 Colt LE6940 semiautomatic rifles purchased by the Fontana Unified School District to help provide security for the school.

By Gillian Flaccus, The Associated Press

The semiautomatic rifles look like they belong in a war zone instead of a suburban public school, but officials in this Los Angeles-area city say the high-powered weapons now in the hands of school police could prevent a massacre.

Fontana Unified School District police purchased 14 of the Colt LE6940 rifles last fall, and they were delivered the first week of December ? a week before the Connecticut school shooting. Over the holiday break, the district's 14 school police officers received 40 hours of training on the rifles. Officers check them out for each shift from a fireproof safe in the police force's main office.

Fontana isn't the first district to try this. Other Southern California districts also have rifle programs ? some that have been in operation for several years. Fontana school police Chief Billy Green said he used money from fingerprinting fees to purchase the guns for $14,000 after identifying a "critical vulnerability" in his force's ability to protect students. The officers, who already wear sidearms, wouldn't be able to stop a shooter like the one in Connecticut, he said Wednesday.?

"They're not walking around telling kids, 'Hurry up and get to class' with a gun around their neck," the chief said. "Parents need to know that if there was a shooter on their child's campus that was equipped with body armor or a rifle, we would be limited in our ability to stop that threat to their children."?

Some parents and students, however, reacted with alarm to the news that school resource officers were being issued the rifles during their shifts. The officers split their time between 44 schools in the district and keep the rifles in a safe at their assigned school or secured in their patrol car each day before checking the weapon back in to the school police headquarters each night.?

Only sergeants trained for years to use the rifles are authorized to check out the rifles from the police armory, where they are kept.?

"If the wrong person gets ahold of the gun, then we have another shooter going around with a gun. What happens then?" said James Henriquez, a 16-year-old sophomore who just enrolled at Fontana High School this week after moving from Texas.?

Other students said they felt disillusioned that officials would spend money on semiautomatic rifles while the district eliminated its comprehensive guidance counseling program two years ago.?

"They should get guns, but not as many and not spend so much money on them," said student Elizabeth Tovar. "They should use the money to get back our counselors because a lot of us really need them."?

The district saved millions by restructuring guidance services, said Superintendent Cali Olsen-Binks.?

The 40,000-student district came up with the school rifle program after consulting with top school safety experts and looking at what other large districts had done, said Olsen-Binks.?

Santa Ana Unified School District, in nearby Orange County, has had a rifle program for about two years that operates similarly to the one Fontana has started, said police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.?

The Los Angeles School Police Department also deploys rifles to its officers as needed, the department said in a statement. It would not say how many rifles district police have but said the weapons are kept in the department's armory and are handed out and returned daily.?

"I came from a teaching background, and it's appalling to think that we'd have to have security officers ? let alone armed police officers ? on our campuses," Olsen-Binks said. "But the bottom line is ... everybody has anxiety over school safety right now."?

The Prevention of Hypertension | SpaceCoast Living Magazine

Dr. Gobivenkata Balaji and registered nurse Denise Clark of VNA of the Space Coast offer insight on the importance of blood-pressure readings

?

One of the worst aspects of hypertension is that it presents no obvious symptoms. You could have it right now and not even know it. That is, obviously, not a good thing. There are a number of ways to help prevent the onset of the disease, however. Let?s start with the obvious.

?The most important thing is to understand is that hypertension is important,? says Gobivenkata Balaji, M.D., an internist of the Brevard Health Center in Melbourne. ?(It?s important to) look for it, and if you find it, tell your physician. Most of the time, we have a problem because we don?t think we have to look for it. You have to look for it.?

The next time you?re in the drug store, sit down for a few minutes at the blood-pressure machine. Don?t forget to mark down your readings. If you can afford a blood-pressure cuff, that?s even better. Just be sure to bring it by your doctor?s office so that it can be checked to make sure it is working properly.

?The prevention of hypertension, and the treatment of hypertension, really involves you and your physician talking ? making sure you?re on the right diet, and that you?re getting the right amount of exercise,? says Denise Clark, RN, BSN, who is a VNA of the Space Coast cardiac disease and telehealth coordinator.

?

?

HYPERTENSION RISK FACTORS

While there are some factors you simply can?t manage, like your age (typically, people 55 or over are at higher risk), your race (it?s more prevalent in non-white males) or a family history of high blood pressure, there are a number of things that are in your hands.

Clark works closely with Dr. Balaji?s patients, and the two agree on several basic things that patients can do to help prevent hypertension. (Readings above 140 over 90 would qualify patients as having the disease.)

There is proper diet, of course. Dr. Balaji and Clark say it?s best to not eat a lot of foods that are high in fat or salt (including salt substitutes). Exercise is also key. While some jobs are predisposed to being constantly active during a work day, it?s the people who spend most of their day at their desk who need to put an emphasis on working out.

Those who are overweight not only run the risk of hypertension, but diabetes and high cholesterol, as well. The more in shape you are, the healthier your heart likely is, too.

Smoking, naturally, is another big no-no. ?When you smoke, you inhale toxins that damage not only your lungs, but the linings in your blood vessels,? says Clark. ?It makes it harder for your heart to pump, and it damages the walls of your blood vessels. It makes them stiffer and causes your blood pressure to go up.?

THE SERIOUSNESS OF LETTING BLOOD PRESSURE GO UNCHECKED
Letting high blood pressure go unchecked can lead to major complications on many fronts. The problem is, though, a common headache or shortness of breath may not be seen as a sign of a much bigger problem.

?There are very few signs which you may or may not notice if your blood pressure is really high,? says Clark. ?That?s the problem. It can be so high, you can have a stroke. That?s what happens to people who have high blood pressure for a long time and they don?t know it, or they don?t follow up with their physician.?

Hypertension can be managed, says Dr. Balaji, provided the patient is put on the right medicine. The patient has to take that medicine as prescribed while also managing blood pressure, which is where Clark and the other nurses at VNA can help.

Whether under a doctor?s care for other health conditions or not, Dr. Balaji suggests that all patients, particularly men, have a routine exam at least once a year to check for high blood pressure, among other things. Doing so more frequently, though, is a big plus.

?Physicians make their decisions based upon data. If we have more data, the decisions will be better, more validated, than basing it on one blood-pressure reading in the office,? says Dr. Balaji.

The life you lead now can have a tremendous influence on the quality of life you may have down the road. In order to truly prevent diseases like hypertension, it?s vital to be vigilant about its prevention.

?What people don?t realize is the preventative efforts they take now will help them so much in the future,? says Clark. ?What diet and exercise will do now will keep you years off of being on medication.?

Fit Tip Tuesday! Liar, liar pants on fire - Blogs - Times Union

Do you find yourself telling little white lies or maybe even big fat ones on a regular basis?

Shame on your first off. (Just kidding). Honesty, is the best policy, not only for your relationships but for your health. Now, there is research to prove it!

A study from Notre Dame, of participants who told fewer lies over a 10-week period, were found to have fewer mental-health complaints, fewer physical complaints and improved personal relationships.

The truth shall set you free and keep you in shape, who knew.

However, we all know that sometimes TMI is not a good thing. So don?t fret. The study did find that distraction can go along way in making you feel better and not having to tell a full out lie.

Symptoms you may feel after lying that aren?t so hot:

  • tension
  • headache
  • sad
  • depression
  • anger
  • sore throat

How to admit to the lie without making things worse:

  • meet the person for a conversation at a neutral, open location like a coffee shop or restaurant. The gym, home alone or in a car are not the best place to admit wrong doing or apologize.
  • get comfortable and try not to create an uncomfortable situation
  • be sincere, look at the person when apologizing and tell the truth
  • face to face is best, but a letter could help get you that face to face meeting

As you know, there are plenty of controversies surrounding the state and integrity (or supposed lack thereof) of bowling. When I started bowling regularly over a year ago, I had no idea of the controversies surrounding bowling, nor did I have any idea about much else about bowling.

I'm now almost 16 years of age and have a lot of knowledge under my belt; actually, I have more knowledge about bowling than I actually need to have for my skill level, or so some people say...

Anyhow, I became aware quite some months ago about bowling controversies. These controversies include the abnormally high scoring pace in random bowling alleys as well as the lack of difference between house bowlers' averages and pro bowlers' averages, even though they compete on completely different shots. However, being someone who isn't exactly affected by the shots (because I've never been in a tournament before, house shot or not...but that is subject to change very, very soon), I try not to worry about these controversies.

As a [relatively inexperienced] youth bowler (because some people have been bowling regularly since before their age was two digits), should I really be worried or affected by these controversies, or should I just carry (Ha, see what I did there? Because I don't) on bowling without worries because I love the sport and have made it my commitment?

Personally, I feel that as long as you enjoy the sport and are making an effort at becoming a better bowler, all of the controversial issues are just distractions. The overall theme if you will regarding the recent controversies are all due to the fact that bowling is in a state of change. New performance balls/coverstocks/cores are allowing the average player to score higher more often and increasing avgs. Modified house shots are now essentially "grown-up bumpers" sending the ball back from the edge, holding in the middles, and even tapering at the end to help guide the ball to the pocket. WAHSAM systems allow for more pins on the deck increasing scores. Two-Handed and thumbless bowling are becoming more popular since they allow for more revs on a ball and better pin action.

These changes are viewed by some as ruining the sport of bowling. I have a big distinction between sport bowling and house bowling. If average people are able to score higher, they are more likely to enjoy the game and can help bowling grow in numbers. That doesn't mean that a person can average 220 on a house shot and then compete in the PBA. The other changes are the types and degree of difficulty in sport patterns. A bowler must be able to read the lane and adjust which the pros do better than any league Joe.

I view a lot of the issues in terms of baseball. The Designated Hitter rule is loved by some and hated by others. It allows for more runs and thus more people watch. But others feel it's not how the game was intended to be played. Aluminum bats allow for farther hits and are used for many levels of play, but they banned them from the MLB. Maybe it's the same with performance balls and such, for different levels of competition, different rules apply.

The amount of respect a bowler gets in non-bowling circles is minimal at best. If more people enjoy bowling I see no harm. If someone avg 220 thinks they can take on Weber or Duke they'll get destroyed. As long as you enjoy yourself, don't let the distractions of others' opinions get in the way of that.

I personally think that as long as it's not possible to average 300 and as long as 900 series aren't as common as 700 and 800 series, then our sport still has at least some integrity.

As long as the general scoring pace isn't like what the women in this clip are getting, bowling is still in a good state.

Most of the controversies aren't going to be fixed because the powers that be don't want them fixed. Bowling center owners love having half the house league bowlers averaging 200+. It even hits the bottom line outside of league time: the easier it is to strike, the more games (at five bucks a pop) the open bowlers can play in the same amount of time. Ball manufacturers are going to keep coming out with "new and improved" equipment to keep sales up. Of course the game has changed. Once upon a time, a 190 average meant you could be a pro. Now a 184 means you're the worst bowler in history, as I have been told many times, and no team will want you unless it's a 100% handicap league or the league has a cap and one team is so stacked that they need a

There is one thing that the sport should do to give people a real idea as to where they stack up. Golf courses have a slope rating, bowling centers should have the same type of thing. Is this a high scoring house or a low scoring house? My home house has a Thursday men's league; half of the league bowls in a Friday men's league at another house 10 minutes away. Of the guys who do both leagues, 95% of them average between 8-15 pins higher in the Friday league than the Thursday league. But when I try to say that the other house is easier than mine, people tell me I am saying things that can't be backed up and the other house has "better bowlers" than mine. Really? Do these same guys become "better bowlers" by driving 10 minutes south? A guy who has 4 300's and 2 800's on Friday has a high game of 267 and one 750 series in the Thursday league. But the Friday league has better bowlers and this has nothing to do with the shot being easier? Fact is, there are enough people who bowl leagues at multiple centers that it's possible to create a slope rating, if they wanted to do it.

To the original post, don't worry about the controversies right now though.

Eternal, I envy u discovering the game in your teen years, you have so much good bowling ahead of you! I was 30yrs of age when I began..

If you love the game, then pretty much everything else is irrelevant.

You obviously are keen on the sport, you want to improve, you join a bowling forum.. Sounds to be mate, like you are hook, line and sinker into this sport. The improvement is almost a given!!

Enjoy the journey of self improvement, the highs and lows, and bowl your best. Be your best, whether it's on THS, sports shot, whatever. Never worry about the seemingly huge insumountable hill of averaging 220 or thereabouts when you are in your first yr or so, nor comparing yourself against others, who have many more years on the clock...

Eternal, I would suggest being aware of the controversies, but not involved in them. I am confident bowling will find its place in the world again, perhaps with the PBA league, perhaps on the international stage, or perhaps some other way.

In the meantime, keep learning everything you can. Practice more when you are bowling well. Practice less when you are struggling. As soon as you can, video yourself, and save the best ones to review later. Remember that you are training your mind as well as your body. When you are ready, challenge yourself on more difficult oil patterns. If you continue to apply yourself, the sky is the limit.

Scores being higher than they were 30 years ago has no bearing on anything. Its now a game where a once a week league bowler, who works hard, can eventually maintain a high average. It doesn't matter what anyone says, it is NOT easy to average 220-230. It takes work, discipline, knowledge, and experience. Yes, its easier to average 200 these days, but even that will require a few years of practice.

All you can do is set goals for yourself and attain them. If you want to win PBA titles, you have a long road ahead of you, but it can be done. If you want to be like the millions of bowlers across America who want to average 180 and post big scores in their league every once in a while, that road is shorter. All that matters is tht you have personal goals, and you do what you can to attain them.

If you're happy with where you're at, and you enjoy the game, you're doing it right. If you are unhappy with where you are at, and bowling and bowlers maker you miserable...you are doing something wrong. That's all there is to it.

Conscripts or professionals? Austria votes on army

VIENNA (AP) ? With no wars to fight and friends on every border, neutral Austria has little reason to feel threatened ? which may explain why Sunday's referendum on the future of its army is being driven by concerns that seem to have nothing to do with how best to defend itself.

At issue in this placid nation of just over eight million people is whether to keep and reform the present system that relies heavily on conscripts, or to go with the European flow and create a professional army, as 21 of the EU's 26 other members have.

Austria's armed forces now consist of about 35,000 troops, with about 14,000 professionals and the rest conscripts who serve for six months as well as a 30,000-strong part-time militia. The proposed reform foresees 8,500 career soldiers, 7,000 who sign up for an average three years, 9,300 militia members and a cuts in hardware useless in fighting security threats that now focus more on terrorism and cyber-attacks than battlefield clashes.

"There is no direct threat, no Russian or Turkish armies at the gates of Vienna," said the city's mayor, Michael Haeupl, in arguing for what he sees is a quality professional army instead of a conscript force of quantity.

But debates leading up to the plebiscite have focused less on the army as a fighting force and more on topics as diverse as how keeping or changing the present system will affect community service, emergency relief or social responsibility.

Much of Austria's social sector has come to depend on conscientious objectors. They serve for nine months as ambulance drivers, attendants at senior citizens' homes and in other community jobs that are hard to fill because of poor pay. Backers of change suggest that's not the army's role and have come up with a model they say would entice people into the sector by paying them four times the basic monthly 301 euros ($400.)

With the army on call in case of civil emergencies, photos of conscripts shoveling out of village cellars after mud slides and filling sand-bags to prevent floods have also strengthened the image of a force whose main task is not necessarily defending the country. Conscripts by the hundreds cleared away major snowfalls this week in villages governed by the centrist People's Party ? which backs the present system.

The party hopes to profit from the general Austrian attitude of don't fix it unless it's broken. In arguing for the present system, Vienna resident Dieter Zakel warns of "many unexpected and unsolvable problems" other countries making the change experienced and questions whether Austrian politicians have the expertise to meet such challenges.

But proponents of change say it's time to streamline the armed forces and move it into the 21st century.

"Our boys are exploited and badly paid in our present system," said Sybille Hofleitner, also from Vienna. "This has to change."

Backers of an army of professionals argue that:

? New and sophisticated national security risks call for career soldiers who can more effectively cooperate with other European professional armies.

? Austria is surrounded by EU allies and neutral Switzerland.

? Low birth rates and increased numbers opting for social instead of military service will soon leave the army short of conscripts.

? A well-paid professional army ? and a separate civil service sector ? will do both jobs better than a conscript army torn between trying to cover both tasks.

Those against say that:

? Neutral Austria does not need a professional army, unlike other EU countries that are NATO members.

? A shortage of personnel looms both for the army and the social service sector without conscription.

? A better-paid professional army and social-service sector will cost more than the present system.

? With natural disasters growing because of climate change, Austria needs its conscripts in case of a major catastrophe.

? Working in the social sector as a conscientious objector teaches civic responsibility.

Formally non-political, the debates have nonetheless turned into an informal pre-election campaign.

The Socialists and the People's Party that now form an uneasy government coalition are strongly divided on the issue, and a decision in Sunday's referendum is seen in some ways as also a test of their popularity ahead of general elections scheduled for September.

If so, the People's Party ? which favors the present system ? has reason to be optimistic. Polls just days ahead of the ballot showed over 50 percent of respondents backing the status quo.

A Man Who Can Cook Is the New Modern Day Mr. Right! Beef ...

Let me begin this post by dispelling the notion that a man who cooks is in some way feminine! On the CONTRARY, a man who can cook to many women is extremely attractive! With that said, let me just put something out there I?ve been saying for some years now; ?A man who can cook is the new modern day Mr. Right!?

To the single ladies?? While wining and dining you is a sure way to make you feel special, there is nothing like a man who will take the time, energy, and effort to cook you a nice meal. I mean most men can read instructions right? They know how to put a bicycle, desk or TV stand together by reading instructions! What would stop their success when reading a recipe? Don?t forget that the way you start out the relationship is the way you will finish!

To the married women?? Let me just say WUSHA! That is how I feel when my wonderful Mr. Right husband decides on his own to surprise me by cooking our family a meal (hence the photos of of him cooking us a wonderful dinner in this post)! Whether you are a stay at home mom who is exhausted from all the laundry, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, etc., or the working mom who is having a hard time at work and needs a break at home, it all leads to the same modern day joy; a man who can cook!

To the single men?? If you want to find and keep a good woman you?ve got to come correct! Have you met someone special you feel you could really be serious about? By cooking her a nice meal, you show her just how wonderful her life would be with you in it! It screams independent, self-confident, loving, patient, and considerate!

To the married men ? If you want to make your wife happy, cook her a nice meal. Make it a surprise! Next, sit back and watch your wife pamper you 100 times over! It is something simple that would mean the world to the woman you love!

A MAN WHO CAN COOK IS THE NEW MODERN DAY MR. RIGHT! BEEF & BROCCOLI DONE RIGHT!

INGREDIENTS:

3 cups of frozen broccoli florets
1 lb. beef stir fry strips
1 cup of long grain white rice & two cups of water (rice is always 2 to 1 ratio)
? cup hoisin sauce
? cup Catalina Dressing (I used Kraft)
1 tbsp. crushed garlic
6 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
Sea Salt to taste
Ground black pepper to taste
Dried thyme to taste

READY, SET, GO:

Boil the water and add a little sea salt and unsalted butter
Add rice to boiling water, turn the heat down to medium, cover and allow to cook for about 10 ? 15 minutes or until rice is al dente (done ~ smile)
When rice is done add 2 tbsp. unsalted butter and ? tbsp. sea salt and stir
NOW LET?S MAKE THE BEEF
Heat extra virgin olive oil in large skillet on medium
Add beef strips to the extra virgin olive oil (it should sizzle sizzle baby)
Allow beef strips to cook for 5 ? 7 minutes or until beef is fully cooked
NOW LET?S MAKE THE BROCCOLI
Add frozen broccoli to a Pampered Chef Vegetable Steamer or medium pot with a cover
Add 1/3 cup of water to broccoli
If you are using the Pampered Chef Vegetable Steamer cover and place in microwave for 8 minutes or until broccoli is tender ? if you are using a medium pot with cover, put on stove and turn heat to medium/high cover but lift the cover just a little so a very small amount of steam can come out and cook for 10 minutes or until broccoli is tender
After broccoli is done, drain, and add unsalted butter and sea salt to taste
NOW LET?S PUT IT ALL TOGETHER
Add broccoli, hoisin sauce, Catalina dressing and crushed garlic to the cooked beef and stir, cook for 8 ? 10 minutes and serve over the white rice.
ENJOY, ENJOY, ENJOY!

BMWK? Do you agree that a man who can cook is the new modern day Mr. Right?

Roe v Wade: After 40 years, deep divide is legacy

NEW YORK (AP) ? By today's politically polarized standards, the Supreme Court's momentous Roe v. Wade ruling was a landslide. By a 7-2 vote on Jan. 22, 1973, the justices established a nationwide right to abortion.

Forty years and roughly 55 million abortions later, however, the ruling's legacy is the opposite of consensus. Abortion ranks as one of the most intractably divisive issues in America and is likely to remain so as rival camps of true believers see little space for common ground.

Unfolding events in two states illustrate the depth of the divide. In New York, already a bastion of liberal abortion laws, Gov. Andrew Cuomo pledged in his Jan. 9 State of the State speech to entrench those rights even more firmly. In Mississippi, where many anti-abortion laws have been enacted in recent years, the lone remaining abortion clinic is on the verge of closure because nearby hospitals won't grant obligatory admitting privileges to its doctors.

"Unlike a lot of other issues in the culture wars, this is the one in which both sides really regard themselves as civil rights activists, trying to expand the frontiers of human freedom," said Jon Shields, a professor of government at Claremont McKenna College. "That's a recipe for permanent conflict."

On another hot-button social issue ? same-sex marriage ? there's been a strong trend of increasing support in recent years, encompassing nearly all major demographic categories.

There's been no such dramatic shift, in either direction, on abortion.

For example, a new Pew Research Center poll finds 63 percent of U.S. adults opposed to overturning Roe, compared to 60 percent in 1992. The latest Gallup poll on the topic shows 52 percent of Americans saying abortion should be legal under certain circumstances, 25 percent wanting it legal in all cases and 20 percent wanting it outlawed in all cases ? roughly the same breakdown as in the 1970s.

"There's a large share of Americans for whom this is not a black-and-white issue," said Michael Dimock, the Pew center's director. "The circumstances matter to them."

Indeed, many conflicted respondents tell pollsters they support the right to legal abortion while considering it morally wrong. And a 2011 survey of 3,000 adults by the Public Religion Research Institute found many who classified themselves as both "pro-life" and "pro-choice."

Shields, like many scholars of the abortion debate, doubts a victor will emerge anytime soon.

"There are reasonable arguments on both sides, making rationally defensible moral claims," he said.

Nonetheless, the rival legions of activists and advocacy groups on the front lines of the conflict each claim momentum is on their side as they convene symposiums and organize rallies to commemorate the Roe anniversary.

Supporters of legal access to abortion were relieved by the victory of their ally, President Barack Obama, over anti-abortion Republican Mitt Romney in November.

A key reason for the relief related to the Supreme Court, whose nine justices are believed to divide 5-4 in favor of a broad right to abortion. Romney, if elected, might have been able to appoint conservative justices who could help overturn Roe v. Wade, but Obama's victory makes that unlikely at least for the next four years.

Abortion-rights groups also were heartened by a backlash to certain anti-abortion initiatives and rhetoric that they viewed as extreme.

"Until politicians feel there's a price to pay for voting against women, they will continue to do it," said Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a lightning rod for conservative attacks because it's the leading abortion provider in the U.S.

In Missouri and Indiana, Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate lost races that their party initially expected to win after making widely criticized comments regarding abortion rights for impregnated rape victims. In Virginia, protests combined with mockery on late-night TV shows prompted GOP politicians to scale back a bill that would have required women seeking abortions to undergo a transvaginal ultrasound.

"All these things got Americans angry and got them to realize just how extreme the other side is," said Jennifer Dalven, director of the American Civil Liberties Union's Reproductive Freedom Project.

"This issue will remain very divisive," she said. "But I do see this as a sea-change moment... The American public wants abortion to remain safe, legal and accessible."

However, anti-abortion leaders insist they have reason for optimism, particularly at the state level.

In the past two years, following Republican election gains in 2010, GOP-dominated state legislatures have passed more than 130 bills intended to reduce access to abortion. The measures include mandatory counseling and ultrasound for women seeking abortions, bans on abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, curbs on how insurers cover the procedure, and new regulations for abortion clinics.

The ACLU and other abortion-rights groups are challenging several of the laws in court, notably the 20-week ban. Yet already this year, Republican leaders in Texas, Mississippi and elsewhere are talking about new legislative efforts to restrict abortion.

Mississippi's Gov. Phil Bryant says he wants to end abortion in the state and is eager for the remaining clinic, the Jackson Women's Health Organization, to close.

"My goal, of course, is to shut it down," Bryant told reporters on Jan. 10. "If I had the power to do so legally, I'd do so tomorrow."

The clinic is a steady target of anti-abortion protesters who take turns praying, singing hymns and confronting patients. Its administrator, Diane Derzis, says the three principal physicians on her staff have been unable to get admitting privileges at area hospitals due to pressure from the anti-abortion movement.

Such developments hearten Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life, one of the groups most active in proposing anti-abortion bills for state legislatures to consider.

"Within the context of Roe, we have been remarkably successful in terms of expanding the legal protection of human life," Yoest said. "We're working to make Roe irrelevant."

Yoest's optimism derives partly from her belief that young Americans are increasingly skeptical about abortion, though polls give mixed verdicts on this matter.

"It is really easy to explain the pro-life position to a child ? it's hard to explain to them why you should kill a baby before it's born," Yoest said.

Supporters of legal access to abortion dispute the notion of swelling anti-abortion sentiment among young people, but some activists do sense a gap in terms of political intensity.

"I have enormous hope in this millennial generation ? they're progressive, thoughtful and they identify in their pro-choice values," said Nancy Keenan, who will soon be stepping down after eight years as president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

"But there is an intensity gap ? they don't act on those values," Keenan said. "The other side votes their anti-choice, pro-life values ? it's at the top of their political activity."

She drew a contrast with the push for same-sex marriage.

"With marriage equality, gays and lesbians are fighting for something they didn't have," Keenan said. "In the case of reproductive rights, you're trying to maintain the status quo. The millennial generation doesn't see it as threatened."

Another difference: the campaign for same-sex marriage has benefited greatly from personal testimony by gay couples, speaking out in legislative hearings and campaign videos. By contrast, although millions of American women have had abortions, relatively few speak out publicly to defend their decisions.

"If you know some women, you know a woman who's had abortion," said Dr. Anne Davis, who is medical director for Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health and provides abortions as part of her practice in New York City.

"But you do not see women talking about their abortions," Davis said. "They do what they need to do and move on. I can't blame people for that."

Davis, who learned abortion techniques during her residency at the University of Washington in the mid-'90s, said the procedure has become increasingly safe ? notably with the advent of abortions via medication. She expressed dismay at the spate of restrictive laws that she and many of her fellow physicians view as ill-founded.

"Initially, we'd say, 'That's ridiculous' ? and now we're stuck with them," she said.

Despite all the furor, abortion has been commonplace in the post-Roe era, with about one-third of adult women estimated to have had at least one in their lifetime.

Of the roughly 1.2 million U.S. women who have abortions each year, half are 25 or older, about 18 percent are teens, and the rest are 20-24. About 60 percent have given birth to least one child prior to getting an abortion. A disproportionately high number are black or Hispanic; and regardless of race, high abortion rates are linked to economic hard times.

The Roe opinion, written by Justice Harry Blackmun, asserted that the right to privacy extended to a women's decision on whether to end a pregnancy. States have been allowed to restrict abortion access at late stages of pregnancy, but only if they make exceptions for protecting the mother's health ? and the net result has been one of the most liberal abortion policies in the world.

At the time of Roe v. Wade, abortion was legal on request in four states, allowed under limited circumstances in about 16 others, and outlawed under nearly all circumstances in the other states, including Texas, where the Roe case originated.

One of the most liberal members of the current Supreme Court, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is among those who have questioned the timing of the Roe ruling and suggested that it contributed to the ongoing bitter debate.

"It's not that the judgment was wrong, but it moved too far too fast," Ginsburg said at Columbia University last year.

She said the court could have put off dealing with abortion while the state-by-state process evolved or it could have struck down just the Texas law, which allowed abortions only to save a mother's life.

Asked about Ginsburg's musings, Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood said the Roe ruling was critically needed to curb unsafe abortions in states where the procedure was outlawed.

"Women were paying the price with their lives," she said.

However, Carter Snead, a Notre Dame law professor who has studied abortion and bioethics, said Blackmun's opinion was wrong to dismantle state anti-abortion laws so sweepingly.

"One key virtue of democracy is that, win or lose, the outcomes are generally seen as legitimate because all of the competing sides have had their say," Snead said in an email. "In Roe, the court short-circuited this process entirely, and handed a near total victory to one side of a bitterly contested question on the gravest of matters."

Snead said abortion opponents have an enduringly compelling argument ? "that the smallest, weakest, and most unwanted nevertheless have a claim on us." But he said this argument can't be translated into public policy without a change in the Supreme Court's makeup.

Looking ahead, there's no clear path toward an easing of the debate. Some activists and politicians say common ground could be found in a broad new campaign to curtail unintended pregnancies, but many anti-abortion leaders have shown little interest in this.

Some abortion opponents, such as Serrin Foster of Feminists for Life, urge bipartisan efforts to support pregnant young women as they pursue careers or education, so they don't feel financial pressure to have an abortion. But supporters of legal access to abortion look askance at such proposals if they are coupled with calls to take abortion decision-making out of a woman's hands.

For Carrie Gordon Earll, now senior policy analyst for the conservative ministry Focus on the Family, that Roe-established freedom of choice once seemed logical. She got pregnant in 1981 while attending a Christian college and opted to have an abortion.

She recently made a video expressing her regrets.

"I can look back at those 40 years and say without a doubt, the world is not a better place because of abortion, women are not in a better place," she says. "What it has created is a world where you're almost expected to abort if you're pregnant at an inopportune time."

In an interview, Earll mused on how the anti-abortion movement has persevered since Roe.

"We've had 40 years of marketing by Hollywood and the cultural elites that abortion is a good thing, and we still have a battle going on," she said. "We're holding our own."

A similar refrain of perseverance is sounded by Dr. Douglas Laube of Madison, Wis., who began performing abortions as part of his practice a year after the Roe decision.

"It was important for women to be able to legally ensure their right to make their own decision," said Laube, who is chairman of Physicians for Reproductive Health Choice. "But it served to polarize society politically."

Laube is worried by the spread of anti-abortion state laws, but encouraged by the surge of women becoming obstetrician-gynecologists ? a trend he hopes will ease the shortage of abortion providers.

"I see the movement toward the religious right being countered by a growing movement among practitioners and advocates for maintaining this as legal," he said. "That means the controversy will continue. But it also means we will hold our ground."
