US lawmakers meet with Iranian exiles in Paris

PARIS (AP) ? With its militant wing no longer a terror organization as far as the U.S. government is concerned, an Iranian opposition group hosted a U.S. House delegation for the first time Sunday and briefed the lawmakers on the fallout of a deadly rocket attack at a refugee camp in Iraq.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran, a France-based Iranian opposition group, gave a raucous welcome at a Paris hotel to the four representatives, with rhythmic clapping and chants of "Thank You!"

But the talks focused on a Feb. 9 rocket attack at a refugee camp in Iraq that houses many of members of Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, or MEK, the group's militant wing. Seven people died and dozens were wounded, the exile group said.

U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, a California Republican, accused Iraq of breaking its promise to help protect the 3,100 refugees who now live on the former American military base known as Camp Liberty. He said he hopes the attack will help accelerate international efforts to resettle them abroad, while issuing a warning to the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

"Put everybody on notice ? and I think I speak for our whole delegation. ... If there is another attack on these helpless refugees by the government, obviously cleared by the government of Iraq, we will move in the United States Congress and put forward a resolution not only just condemning the act but declaring Prime Minister Maliki and his government state sponsors of terrorism," Rohrabacher told reporters.

Iraq's Shiite-led, pro-Iranian government considers MEK a terrorist group and wants the international community to speed up the resettlement of the refugees elsewhere. NCRI officials say only a handful of refugees have been resettled.

The refugee camp is meant to be a temporary way station while the United Nations works to find host countries for the refugees. They are unlikely to return to Iran because of their opposition to the Islamic regime. Before being moved to the Baghdad area camp, members of the MEK lived in another camp, called Ashraf, in northeastern Iraq ? itself the hub of deadly violence in the past.

The MEK, which is also called the People's Mujahedeen of Iran, opposes Iran's clerical regime and has carried out assassinations and bombings in Iran. It fought in the 1980s alongside Saddam Hussein's forces in the Iran-Iraq war, and several thousand of its members were given sanctuary in Iraq by Saddam. The group renounced violence in 2001 and the Obama administration took the MEK off the U.S. terrorism list in September.

"It was our belief that once we took that unwarranted designation off the MEK, that it would help facilitate the transfer of these helpless and defenseless refugees ... to safe havens in other countries," said Rohrabacher, who heads the subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia and Emerging Threats of the House Foreign Affairs committee. "I personally am disappointed in our government ? and other governments ? that we have not stepped forward more quickly to do this. Hopefully this attack, this murder of these innocent and unarmed people will speed up this process."

But Maryam Rajavi, president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, said through a spokesman that "there has been no change in resettlement since last week" and "a similar attack can take place any day and any minute."

Rohrabacher all but accused Iran of a hand in the Feb. 9 killings.

"We have to assume that the Iranian government and the Iraqi government are working together in order to murder unarmed opponents of the Iranian mullah regime. I don't believe that it is irrational for anyone to think that this act of terrorism that results in the death of these innocent people isn't a calculated effort ? and the mullahs couldn't do it on their own," he said.

"So we know that Prime Minister Maliki must be working with the mullah dictatorship to accomplish this end."

Wisconsin holds on to beat Minnesota 3-2

CHICAGO (AP) ? Wisconsin scored three times in the second period and held on to beat second-ranked Minnesota 3-2 Sunday in the Hockey City Classic at Soldier Field.

Sean Little capped a flurry of goals with the game-winner at 16:22 of the second period for the Badgers (13-10-7, 10-7-7), who spoiled the Gophers' first outdoor game. Wisconsin is 3-0-0 in games played outdoors.

"That's what cost us the game," Minnesota coach Don Lucia said. "They got some puck luck and we got away from the things we should be doing."

Lucia said the Badgers adjusted to the less-than-ideal ice conditions. "We wanted a skill game and with these conditions you are not going to get a skill game."

Instead, all three Wisconsin goals came on rebounds and deflections.

After a scoreless period, Kevin Schulz dribbled a shot past Minnesota goalie Adam Wilcox, who finished with 16 saves.

John Ramage scored 1:10 later when his shot deflected into the net for a 2-0 lead. Little followed with rebound 2:09 later. That goal was the eventual winner.

Wisconsin had a first-period goal by Joseph LaBate disallowed for a high stick.

Seth Ambroz and Zach Budish scored early and late in the third period for the Gophers (20-6-4, 12-6-4), who were 0-for-2 on the power play. Minnesota went 3-for-4 with a man advantage in Friday's 3-2 win.

Wisconsin goalie Joel Rumpel kicked away a shot as time expired to preserve the win. He had 36 saves.

"It was a great experience, and they did a great job with the conditions," Lucia said. "But experience is always better when you win."

Justin Bieber Pick-Up Lines: Pop Star's Lyrics Used To Hit On Girls (VIDEO)

Tommy Wooldridge, the smooth operator behind the viral "Blink-182 Pick-Up Lines" video is back at it again, this time to try his luck hitting on girls using lyrics from the Biebs. Invoking the words of the "Swagosaurus Rex," Tommy hopes, will help him to be less romantically challenged. Watch the video above to see how (un)successful his efforts were.

The amazing one-liners ("I could be your Buzz Lightyear...") give even these Taylor Swift lyrics used as pick-up lines a run for their money.

What would you do if someone used these lines on you? Which artist's lyrics do you think would make the best pick-up lines? Tell us in the comments or tweet @HuffPostTeen!

Syrian state news agency says power outage plunges Damascus and southern Syria into darkness

HOUSTON (Reuters) - Michael Jordan never played against LeBron James but that has not stopped the two from going one-on-one over how to determine greatness on the basketball court. Jordan, widely hailed as the best player of all-time and who turns 50 on Sunday, believes it is all about championship rings, while James, 28, thinks that view is a little too simplistic. The debate has been the chief talking point of reporters and players in the run-up to the National Basketball Association's (NBA) All-Star game in Houston on Sunday. ...

Rolls-Royce secures 2,000 jobs and boosts order book

14 February 2013

Ahead of its 2012 results published today, Britain's blue chip aerospace and defence contractor Rolls-Royce announced a new 10-year contract with the Ministry of Defence (MOD) that the company says will sustain up to 2,000 UK jobs.

R-R said the contract, worth around ?800 million, provided the long-term commitment required to deliver a step change in operational efficiency, enabling cost savings in the provision of nuclear propulsion systems for the UK's existing and future submarine flotilla.

The 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review led to a commitment by the industry, including Rolls-Royce, to deliver cost savings of more than ?900million over a 10-year period by the creation of a Submarines Enterprise Performance Programme (SEPP).

Among the highlights of Rolls' annual results were a reported 4% hike in the company's order book to just over ?60bn, sales of ?12.2bn, up 8%, and a 24% increase in pre-tax profit to ?1.4bn.

Chief executive John Rishton said: "The strength of our order book demonstrates the confidence our customers have in our products and services. Our priorities remain: delivering on the promises we have made; deciding where to grow and where not to; and improving financial performance.

"In 2013, we expect modest growth in underlying revenue and good growth in underlying profit with cash flow around break even as we continue to invest for the future."

The company also announced the appointment of a new chairman, former boss at the management consultancy McKinsey and BP director Ian Davis, who will succeed Sir Simon Robertson who is retiring.

A little Lone Star love: Microsoft inks big deal with Texas for Office 365

Microsoft just scooped up a big deal for its Office 365 suite of cloud-based productivity products, inking a deal with the?Texas Department of Information Resources. As part of the deal, more than 100,000 employees for the state of Texas ? from agencies suchHealth and Human Services System to the Department of Transportation to the Department of Criminal Justice ? will be using the online tools. Office 365 includes the Web-based applications for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

It marks the latest government agency win for Microsoft Office 365 in the past three months. Last November, the?U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced that it would be utilizing the service for its 600,000 employees.

?No other solution provides the rich capabilities of Office 365, including webconferencing, real-time collaboration, and document and calendar sharing,? said Todd Kimbriel, director of E-Government for the Texas Department of Information Resources, in a release. ?Office 365 will increase efficiency and help our agencies better serve the needs of citizens without compromising on security or privacy.?

Office 365 is a critical product for Microsoft as it attempts to fend off threats to its core business from services like Google Apps.

Inventive tea drinks multiply on restaurant menus | What's Hot ...

From hot to iced, tea continues to gain popularity with consumers, Datassential finds

With consumers increasingly seeking more healthful beverages when dining out, tea ? both hot and iced ? is steadily gaining popularity, and different variations of the drink are proliferating on restaurant menus.

In 2012, iced tea was offered on 74 percent of menus from restaurants that sold beverages, second only to soda among nonalcoholic beverages, according to research firm Datassential?s MenuTrends platform. Hot tea also saw a strong presence on menus, with 63 percent of restaurants offering the beverage in 2012, making it more prevalent than lemonade, milk, premium coffee, hot chocolate, iced coffee and several other beverages, Datassential found. ?

The beverage?s increased exposure and growing popularity can be attributed to several factors, says Nancy Kruse, menu trend analyst and president of the Kruse Company.

Iced tea flavors?First, the beverage category as a whole is super hot,? Kruse said. ?Second, and related to the first, is that beverages offer superior margins. Plus, tea is very versatile and mixes well with a range of flavor treatments. I also think that tea benefits from the halo of health, and patrons like better than to feel virtuous while indulging in something they truly like.?

In addition to adding traditional hot and iced tea to menus, restaurants are more frequently offering fruit-flavored versions of the beverage. Raspberry-flavored iced tea was the most popular variety of iced tea in 2012, appearing on 13 percent of restaurant menus, Dataessential found. Other fruit flavors that cracked the top 10 in terms of menu penetration were peach, lemon, mango and strawberry.

Restaurant brands across all segments took note of the growing consumer demand for flavored iced teas with a variety of new menu item rollouts. In 2012, Arby?s rolled out a Passion Fruit Iced Tea, Wendy?s introduced Wild Berry Tea, Ruby Tuesday began offering a Blackberry Handcrafted Fruit Tea, and Peet?s Coffee & Tea added a Berry Pomegranate Tea Freddo, which is a juice-infused iced tea beverage topped with whipped cream.

Sigma DP1 Merrill

The Sigma DP1 Merrill ($999 direct) is the latest iteration of the company's ground-breaking DP1, which, back in 2009, was?the first digital compact to squeeze a D-SLR sized APS-C image sensor into a pocketable body. The market is a bit more saturated now, with competing models like the Leica X2 and the full-frame Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100. The DP1 Merrill sets itself apart from the crowd with a wide-angle (28mm equivalent) lens and a Foveon image sensor, but it's a camera?that requires some work and patience to really appreciate. If you're a more casual shooter, you're better off with our Editors' Choice, the Sony RX100, a pocket shooter with a smaller, but top-notch, 1-inch image sensor, and a lower price.

Foveon Image Sensor, Design, and Features
Much like the Sigma SD1 Merrill, the DP1 uses a Foveon X3 image sensor. This design uses three layers to record information,?each one sensitive to a different color channel. Traditional digital cameras use a single-layer sensor with a Bayer overlay, which has grids of red, blue, and green pixels to create a color image. Each layer of the DP1's sensor boasts a 15.4-megapixel resolution?because of this, Sigma advertises it as a 46-megapixel camera, even though the resulting, printable images are limited to 15.4 megapixels in size.

The sensor design omits the low-pass filter, which is a trend on higher-end cameras. But because of its design, which by its nature omits the Bayer color-array filter, there's no danger of moir? entering into your shots. The downside to the unique design is that there's no support for the DP1's Raw format in Lightroom or similar software programs?you'll have to use Sigma's Raw software to process photos.

In terms of design, the DP1 is essentially a brick with a lens, measuring 2.6 by 4.8 by 2.5 inches, and weighing in at 12 ounces. It's not that far off in size and weight from the 2.7-by-4.9-by-2 inch, 11.2-ounce?Leica X2, which has a narrower 36mm-equivalent lens. The X2 supports an add-on EVF, which is an option that is not available on the DP1. There is a hot shoe directly above the lens, so using a fixed optical finder that matches its field of view and trusting its autofocus system is an option.

The lens is a 19mm focal length, which translates into 28mm in terms of full-frame photography. It has a maximum aperture of f/2.8. The field of view is the widest of all of the current fixed-lens compact cameras. (Sigma also makes a DP2 Merrill with a 46mm equivalent lens, and a DP3 Merrill with a 75mm, each with a maximum f/2.8 aperture.) If you're looking for zoom, look elsewhere, but for those of us who see the world in that focal length, the DP1 is a welcoming camera.

Pleasingly minimal, the camera's color scheme is flat black, with a metal chassis that is cool to the touch. Buttons are labeled in white?for shooting functions?and red?for playback functions. On top you'll find Power, Mode, a control wheel, and the shutter. The rear houses the Auto Exposure lock, a four-way controller with a center select button (the up direction lets you select the focus mode, the bottom the focus point), Play, a button to control the amount of information shown on the rear display, a Menu button, and the QS button.

The QS (Quick Set) button grants access to seven quick shooting controls. Press it once and you can adjust the ISO, Exposure Compensation, Drive Mode, and image format settings. Press it a second time and the menu switches to White Balance, image compression, color balance, and image format (in the same place as the first menu) settings. It's a well-designed interface, and lets you adjust settings without diving into the menu system.

The 3-inch rear display packs a 920k-dot resolution. It's sharp and gives you a good idea about the quality of the images you are capturing?although if you're shooting at higher ISO settings, the JPG previews that are displayed will look downright awful compared with the Raw files that the DP1 can capture.

Surface Pro bashed for battery, storage. Microsoft responds.

Microsoft's Surface Pro tablet is a full-featured machine ? and it eats battery life like one, too.?

By Matthew Shaer / February 8, 2013

The Microsoft Surface Pro tablet.

As testers have discovered in recent days, the Surface Pro runs out of juice after about?four or five hours, give or take. (By comparison, the Apple iPad, one of the chief Surface Pro competitors on the tablet side, can go up to 10 hours without a charge.)?

The good news: Microsoft may be mulling the release of some battery-extending hardware. In an AMA over at Reddit (hat tip to PC Mag), Panos Panay, who heads the Surface division at Microsoft, discussed "future peripherals that can click in and do more."?

A precondition for those peripherals, he said, "would require extending the design of the accessory spine to include some way to transfer higher current between the peripheral and the main battery. Which we did...."

As Jared Newman of PC World notes, Mr. Panay is probably referring to the new connector plates at the bottom of the Surface Pro.?

So yes, don't count out the possibility of some more battery life for the Surface Pro just yet.?

Here's?Mr. Newman again:?

The question is, can Microsoft build a new keyboard cover with its own battery that doesn't compromise the design of the Surface itself? The existing Type Cover ? the one with mechanical keys ? is already a bit clunky as a screen protector. Make it thicker, and the design hews closer to the litany of existing clamshell-like hybrids, such as the?Samsung ATIV Smart PC?and the?Lenovo ThinkPad Helix. The unique appeal of the Surface, as a tablet whose keyboard cover easily folds out of the way, would start to diminish.

The Surface Pro hits shelves this weekend. The device has received generally positive marks from reviewers, who have praised the blazing speed and fluid user experience.?

"The Surface Pro is an important idea, almost a new category, and it will be the right machine for a lot of people," opines?David Pogue of the New York Times. "It strikes a spot on the size/weight/speed/software spectrum that no machine has ever struck."

Still, besides the battery-life issue, some critics have taken issue with the storage space, to boot ? although Microsoft says its base model Surface Pro gets 64 GB, The Verge estimates it may be more like 23 GB of real, usable storage.?
