Black Hat USA Conference To Focus On Smart Phone Security Threats

The Black Hat USA 2012 security conference is set to kick off with a focus on highlighting the vulnerabilities of mobile technology like smart phones.

Now in its 15th year, the Las Vegas conference draws experts from the technology and IT security realm, and with the boom in mobile technology of smart phones and tablets there will be plenty to discuss, PCWorld reported. The telephones people carry in their pockets today are equivalent to computers of just a few years back, and with a wealth of sensitive information and apps for online banking or other functions with personal information, security for these devices is a hot topic.

The security researchers speaking at the conference will highlight vulnerabilities in web applications and communications for these mobile devices. The technology has advanced so far that some mobile users can enact mobile payments by simply waving their smartphone over a special device that completes the transaction.

Charlie Miller, renowned Apple hacker, has found some glaring vulnerabilities that he plans to present at the Black Hat USA Conference, PCWorld reported. He found that some technology can be used to make the smartphones open web pages without user approval, creating annoying and often dangerous applications to open that can slow down the performance of the phone or invite viruses.

In some cases attackers are able to use the devices, known as near field communications, to gain complete access to the phone, Miller said. This allows them to steal photos and contacts and even send text messages or make calls.

The Black Hat USA Conference will also feature presentations on how vulnerabilities allow hackers to turn mobile phones into spying devices by tricking them into communicating with a rogue GSM station, which is a scaled-down version of a cell tower. These attacks don?t even need the rogue stations, and can be conducted using IP-based connections.

Mobile malware will be another focus of the Black Hat USA Conference, especially threats to the Android platform. Google has created an automated malware scanning service called bouncer that stops viruses from being uploaded to Google play, PCWorld noted.

The Black Hat USA Conference is expected to draw more than 6,500 IT security experts, PRNewswire reported. Speakers include the slate of original security experts featured at the inaugural 1998 conference.

Small Business Disaster loans available for non-farm businesses ...

Small, non-farm businesses in 43 Iowa counties and neighboring counties in Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin are now eligible to apply for low interest federal disaster loans from the U. S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Alfred E. Judd, Director of SBA?s Disaster Field Operations Center-West said Wednesday, that the loans offset economic losses because of the frosts and freezes that occurred in the following primary Iowa counties from April 6th through the 30th. Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching are not eligible for SBA disaster assistance.

The Primary Iowa counties in this area include: Audubon and Harrison.? Neighboring Iowa counties: Adair, Carroll, Cass, Crawford, Dallas, Guthrie, Monona, Pottawattamie, and Shelby.

Agricultural enterprises should contact the Farm Services Agency (FSA) about the U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) assistance made available by the Secretary?s declaration. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA?s secure Web site at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Disaster loan information and application forms are also available from SBA?s Customer Service Center by calling SBA toll-free at (800) 659-2955, emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov, or visiting SBA?s Web site at www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance.

Small, nonfarm businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and most private, nonprofit organizations of any size may qualify for Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs) of up to $2 million to help meet financial obligations and operating expenses which could have been met had the disaster not occurred. The deadline to apply for the loans is March 11th, 2013. By law, SBA makes EIDLs available when the U. S. Secretary of Agriculture designates an agricultural disaster. Secretary Tom Vilsack declared this disaster at the request of Governor Terry Branstad.

Open access science debate shifts to EU after UK government backing

LONDON (Reuters) - The debate over free access to publicly-funded scientific research will shift to the European Commission after the UK government backed a report calling for financial support for researchers to use so-called 'open access' science journals.

Open access journals charge researchers a fee for publishing their research rather than the subscriptions that traditional journals charge readers.

The debate over open access is raging on both sides of the Atlantic, driven by the argument that science funded by governments and charities should not sit behind a pay-wall and generate huge profits for private companies.

The next battleground will be the EU's planned 80 billion euro research funding program known as Horizon 2020. It will award grants for research projects running for six years from 2014.

The UK government will be out on a limb in its support for open access unless the EU and, even more importantly, the United States fall in behind it.

"If the EU puts in an open access mandate then it's the whole of Europe and the game is won," said one source close to the issue.

Universities and Science Minister David Willetts on Monday said the funds to support the transition to open access in the UK will have to come from the existing UK science budget of 4.6 billion pounds.

In the long term, the government would like to see a wholesale shift to open access but during the transition period universities will have to shoulder both the costs of subscribing to important academic journals and the charges levied on its researchers to publish in open access media.

The government's failure to find new money to fund the transition to open access has sparked fears that there will inevitably be less money for the research itself.

"We are concerned that these transitional costs appear set to fall on the science budget, reducing the funding available for UK researchers to carry on the work that has put this country at the forefront of many fields, including physics," said Sir Peter Knight, president of the UK's Institute of Physics.

Willetts believes the extra 50-60 million pounds needed to support publication charges can be found in efficiency savings in other areas of university funding but he predicted the benefits of a shift to open access will outweigh any short-term pain.

"It will allow academics and businesses to develop and commercialize their research more easily and herald a new era of academic discovery," the minister said in a statement.

But Dame Janet Finch, who headed the group that produced the government-commissioned report, argued the economic benefits of easier access to research warrant extra investment.

"Although I recognize that we are in a period of financial stringency, the government has endorsed the huge economic potential of this move," said Finch in a statement. "I therefore hope that this will be taken into account in the next round of funding allocations to research funders and to universities."

Academic publishers like Reed Elsevier PLC, Springer Science + Business Media and Macmillan's Nature Publishing Group, will continue to earn revenue under either model. All of them have a number of open access options in their stable of journals.

The big unknown is the impact on research funding if there is a wholesale shift to open access that includes premier journals like Nature, Science and Cell.

While charges for publication in existing open access media average about 2,000 pounds per research paper, Nature has already estimated it would have to charge in excess of 10,000 pounds to maintain revenues if it abandoned subscriptions.

(AP) ? With Batman lurking, the prehistoric critters of "Ice Age: Continental Drift" ran off with the box office, earning $46 million in their opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The animated film from 20th Century Fox is the fourth in the "Ice Age" series and the first in 3-D. The North America performance of "Continental Drift" was on par with previous "Ice Age" movies but well below the opening weekend of the second installment, "The Meltdown," which opened with $68 million in 2006.

There has now been a decade of "Ice Age" films, allowing the characters voiced by Ray Romano, Queen Latifah and John Leguizamo to become increasingly familiar to audiences, particularly international ones. The film had already done robust overseas business ahead of opening in the U.S. This weekend it earned $95 million internationally, bringing its overseas total to $339 million.

"Scrat rules the world," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for Fox, referring to the films' rat-squirrel mascot, whose wordless, futile pursuit of a nut is a mainstay of the movies.

The "Ice Age" franchise has now surpassed $2.2 billion worldwide, and the studio expects "Continental Drift" to equal the global total of the last installment, 2009's "Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which took in $886.7 million.

"There's really not very many animated franchises that have had three sequels," said Aronson. "The performance of 'Ice Age' has been remarkably consistent."

The weekend was inevitably shadowed by two superheroes, coming a week after the debut of Sony's Spider-Man reboot, "The Amazing Spider-Man," and one week before the highly-anticipated Batman sequel, "The Dark Knight Rises."

In its second week of release, "Spider-Man" earned $35 million, pushing it past $200 million domestically. It earned nearly $67 million overseas over the weekend, bringing its worldwide gross is now $521.4 million.

Seth MacFarlane's R-rated comedy hit, "Ted," which stars Mark Wahlberg and a talking teddy bear, added $22.1 million in its third week for a total of $159 million for Universal Pictures.

But the weekend belonged to family films, which had three of the top 10 films at the box office.

"Ice Age" is the third animated blockbuster to debut at No. 1 this summer, and the previous mega-cartoons ? Pixar Animation's "Brave" and DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" ? also padded their totals. In fourth place, "Brave" added $10.7 million to its $195.6 million domestic total, and the 10th place "Madagascar 3" added $3.5 million to its $203.7 million domestic total.

"This shows how incredibly important the family audience is, particularly in the summer when families are looking for entertainment that's appropriate for the kids and the parents as well," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "You've got three family films that all performed incredibly well and each weekend topped the box office."

The weekend business was, as expected, below the corresponding weekend last year, when the final Harry Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," set what was then a box office record of $169.2 million.

"The Avengers" earlier this year opened bigger than "Deathly Hallows," but that record could well be tested by Christopher Nolan's third Batman film come next weekend.

"This is the calm before the storm that is 'The Dark Knight,'" said Dergarabedian.
