Benedictine College Player Killed in Car Crash

ATCHISON, Kan. ? Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. is mourning the loss of one of its students. Sophomore basketball player R.J. Demps died in a crash on Wednesday morning.

Students and faculty on the school?s campus are saddened and stunned by the deadly accident that happened on 45 Highway near Weston. Most of the students are on winter break at this time, but staff members took the news of Demps? death hard. They were also surprised that another teammate and friend was hurt in the crash.

FOX 4 spoke to Demps? basketball coach and one of his professors. They say he was a team player on and off the court. They say he took incoming students under his wing and that he was the type of guy to make everyone laugh.

The men?s basketball team had just played a game against Harris Stowe University on Tuesday night. Demps was heading home to Colorado to see family and celebrate his upcoming 21st birthday. Unfortunately, he never made it. People who remain on campus are holding onto their memories of Demps.

?He was one of these special kids that leaves an impact on you,? said Sports and Information Director Josh Pound.

The men?s basketball coach says the news was hard to take for everyone involved.

?Our hearts go out to RJ?s family, and they?re our first priority,? said Basketball Coach Ryan Moody.

Demps? teammate, Quaran Johnson, suffered minor injuries in the accident. The campus says he has likely gone home to Philadelphia as he mourns the loss of his good friend.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Police say slick roads may have contributed to the crash.
