The road of personal growth and development isn't without its roadblocks and potholes; there are a lot of things that can happen that can impede your self-improvement efforts. That doesn't mean you should just throw in the towel and give up, though - there are things you can do to counteract the three common things that get in the way of your personal growth. Distractions While we're working on a task or a personal project, we can get easily distracted by things that appear to be more interesting than the task at hand. The internet really isn't helping either - social networks and other internet media have become a virtual playground for distracted folk all over the world. The next time you get distracted, sit back and ask yourself: Is this really more important than what you actually need to do? Will it benefit your personal growth and development? If the answer is no, then go back to finishing your task! Past Traumas We've all made mistakes that we regret in the past. We all need to remember those mistakes so that we can learn not to repeat them in the future, but thinking about those mistakes in a negative way does more harm than good. Fear of repeating past mistakes can be crippling, and can really stunt your growth as a person. Don't let the mistakes of the past tie you down - use them as stepping stones to improving yourself. Think about what you learned from the mistake instead of the mistake itself, and move forward with that vital lesson in hand. Negative People There are always people out there who will do nothing but bring you down. These are the ever-pessimistic co-workers who think you can't accomplish anything no matter how hard you try, and the critics who scoff at your hard work. Obviously, these people are detrimental to your personal growth and development because they kill your optimism and ruin your determination. Avoid these people as much as you can, and surround yourself with people who will support you and critique your progress in a productive way. If they can't be avoided, then do your best to simply ignore all their negativity and maintain a positive attitude! Now that you know how to help get past these three common barriers to self-improvement, you'll have an easier time in your endeavours. You have to remember, though, that these aren't the only things that affect your personal growth and development in negative ways. When other obstacles block your progress, find a way to work your way around them or obliterate them completely so that you can continue growing and enriching your life experience.
