Indiana football

Coming off a good scrimmage against Riverton Parke HS a week ago, we faced
a stronger Tri-Central football team. We were kind of shell-shocked in the
first half as they breezed through our defensive line for four touchdowns
plus a safety.? We were four yards short off the goal line, as time
expired just before the halftime.? We regrouped and played better football
in the second half.? Chace Shaffer scored the first touchdown on a 20 yard
run.? Jermaine Briggs dashed off on a 40 yard around-the-end run for
another touchdown.? Our defense will need? a big adjustment for our next
game against MSSD. The game will start at 2:00 PM at the MSSD field,
Saturday, August 27

Indiana volleyball

On August 18, we hosted our familiar foe again ? the Lapel Bull Dogs ? but
this time, it is a 2A School.? In the first set, we played at a top-notch
performance again facing their strong defense due to their advantage of
physical strength and height; however, we were able to finish off early
25-16.? You may say it was ?David v. Goliath?.? On the second set, we took
the early advantage to jump in the lead with our first two rotations in
serving,? however, the Bulldogs refused to bow down and tied us at 10.??
With our mental errors, we found ourselves trailing them until we finally
got ourselves in the lead after scoring our 19th .? We never looked back
once again till TraciAnn Hoglind, setter who made a surprise dump when
setting the passing ball, then handed the win to the Lady Hoosiers 25-22.?
In the third set, it seemed that we were going to make a habit of grabbing
an early lead and running until our opponent came back and tied us at 7.?
We fought tooth and nail until we managed to allow at least a 3 points
lead gap to earn our 2nd victory of this year 25-20.? The Lady Hoosiers
were led by Guiletta Maucere and JamiLee Hoglind who made 11 and 8 kills
respectively, along with Kate Fetzer?s 13 digs.
Last Tuesday, August 22, we won our 3rd match against Irvington.? Due to
our opponent?s weakness in serve receive, we took advantage with our
threatening servers.? We made many serve aces along with 5 or more kills
from some players.? The setter made a total of 18 assists.? The final
scores were 25-4, 25-7, 25-8.? The record is 3-0.? Our next home match is
on Wednesday versus Eminence at 5:30 p.m. for varsity only.

Special homecoming for SCSD?s Sanderson

Allen Sanderson has had Aug. 25 circled on his calendar for a long time.

For starters, it will be his first game as South Carolina School for the
Deaf co-head coach. And it also will be a homecoming for Sanderson, a
Florence native, when SCSD plays at the King.s Academy tonight at 7 p.m.

.Looking forward to getting back in Flo-town,. Sanderson wrote via e-mail.
.I actually attended King.s Academy in third grade. Some great memories
there..

Sanderson, who is deaf, expects to have friends and family members in
attendance for tonight.s game.

Sanderson graduated from West Florence in 2001. He played on the
basketball team for two seasons and played receiver and cornerback on the
football team his senior year.

After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 2006, he has worked as a therapist
in Florida and also as an imaging specialist at ADP in Florence before
taking the job this year at SCSD.

In addition to his coaching duties, Sanderson works as a counselor for the
school located in Spartanburg.

.Coaching is fun because we work to instill confidence in young men and
solidify their skills in a game that requires hard work, mental toughness
and team unity,. Sanderson said. .The relationship with the players makes
it rewarding. Everyone plays a role on the team. There.s camaraderie.
Teamwork. Players will eventually learn that football is a lot like life
in that they will face adversity..

SCSD is located in Spartanburg and has about 270 students, who are either
deaf, blind or multi-handicapped. Most of the students are from out of
town and live on campus in dorms, with many of them going home on Fridays
and return Sunday nights. Because of that, SCSD plays most of its games
Thursdays.

SCSD, which won the Mason-Dixon Conference Championship last season, has
17 players on its team but has had limited practice time together. With
players enrolling at different times, Sanderson said the team has had only
three practices together.

.We teach every player as much as we can when they enroll and bring the
other players up to speed when they arrive on campus,. Sanderson said.

Sanderson said the team has developed a coded communication system. A sign
for a play is relayed to the quarterback who then communicates it to the
players in the huddle.

This is the second straight year TKA has played SCSD. The Lions won 40-0
last season in Spartanburg.
