Ducted fan propulsion is used in airplane, airships, airboats, hovercraft and blower packs. In airplane applications, ducted fans regularly contain added and smaller blades than propellers and thus can manage at higher rotational speeds. The operating pace of an unshrouded propeller is reduced since tip speeds almost reach the sound barrier at slower speeds than an equivalent ducted fan.
