Infectious pathogenic diseases that spread from one person to another primarily through unprotected sexual activity are classified as Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). Some infections may also be transmitted from an infected mother to her unborn child or, as the child passes through the birth canal. STDs are also transmitted through infected tissue transplants and blood transfusions. Probably the most common STDs are Chlamydia, Syphilis, Herpes, Gonorrhea and the dreadful HIV.

This highlights the necessity of imparting sexual and health education and the requirement for regular campaigns to promote regular STD testing. Individuals who engage in same sex relationships should also consider periodic STD testing, particularly for HIV. There are specific tests for every known STD. For example, Syphilis serology is used to detect Syphilis and HBsAg is used to detect Hepatitis B infections. While abstinence may be the most effective way of avoiding STDs, it might not be practical for many individuals. Sexually active people can avoid transmitting and contracting STDs through consistent use of preventive steps like condoms. As a proactive measure, they must visit STD test clinics to get vaccinated against Hepatitis and HPV.
