Start-ups Getting Free Legal Advice ? Inc. Wire

Entrepreneurs

An incubator program from Brooklyn Law School is helping entrepreneurs manage legal issues.

New York start-ups looking for bargain legal advice are turning to a law school clinic for help.

The Brooklyn Law Incubator & Policy Clinic (BLIP) functions as a technology-oriented law firm, reports Forbes, offering free legal advice for New York City tech entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs receive the expertise needed to maneuver the countless legal issues involved with starting a new venture?without having to pay expensive hourly rates. And the law students selected to participate in the program get the invaluable experience of representing a newly founded company.

Meanwhile, unlike traditional law firms that may not understand the culture of start-ups, BLIP?s young students are more adept at representing young, experimental entrepreneurs, Forbes reports.

When digital entrepreneur Jigar Mehta watched thousands of Egyptian protestors storm into Cairo?s Tahrir Square last year, Forbes reports, he was struck with the idea of making a documentary about the uprising by curating all of the user-generated footage into a film. But before he began compiling the photos, videos, blogs and tweets, Mehta called the BLIP for help with privacy and intellectual property issues.

?If I had to do it myself, I could do it,? he told Forbes. ?But it?s so much work and so precise the legalize that just having them (BLIP) there to help with that process made such a difference.? ?John McDermott
