Parrots are very often the popular choice for a pet bird. They are extremely colorful and very affectionate. These birds are highly intelligent and can be trained easily enough. Parrots have in fact been popular since the 1500s when the first parrot was transported across the sea to the US. Lavish the right care and attention on your bird and it will live a long and happy life, making you a very good pet as well.
The cage is always the first thing you should pay attention to considering the wide variety of choices available. Pick something that will be easy to clean and without any sharp angles and edges. Make sure the cage you buy is as spacious as possible; it will be the bird?s home for large parts of each day. The bird should be able to spread its wings fully and also strut around freely.
Line the cage with old newspaper that you can replace daily and find a good location for the cage. The location should be in a place with good ventilation but not too much draft or direct sun. Keep your bird far away from your kitchen and cooking fumes. The living room is a good place but you should take care not to allow cigarette smoke and other pollutants and chemical fumes anywhere in the room.
Parrots need to be fed once a day at least and given treats when you can. If you use the prepared parrot pellets, make sure to supplement meals with fresh fruit and vegetables that have been well washed. Bits of cheese, biscuits, cooked meat and fish are all good but definitely no chocolate, onions, avocados or any of the things that are harmful to the bird.
You need to let your parrot out a couple of times at least each day, but do not leave it unsupervised or you will have lots of chewed up wallpaper and furniture to deal with. Get your bird toys made from natural materials like hemp rope and wood and let it do as much damage as it wants to them. If you have budget constraints use the things in your home like toilet rolls (empty), kitchen towel rolls and used cardboard boxes.
When choosing your bird, if you have other pets like a dog or cat, you can ask the breeder for a bird reared among other animals. The same rule applies for children but you need to be careful with small children because parrots have large beaks
Put a small padlock on the door ? some birds are clever enough to learn to lift the latch!
