CASPER, Wyo. (AP) ? The first stop of Snake River?s ?Big 3? farewell tour began this week with the Shrine Bowl.
?The start of the end,? Rex Stanley said after a South team practice at Natrona County High School.
While Stanley, Miles Englehart and Daniel Wille still have time left in the sun this summer, it?s hard to not look back on what they helped the Rattlers accomplish the last two years.
All told, the trio led Snake River to six state titles: the Rattlers football team went a combined 21-0 the last two years (two Class 1A/6-man state titles), the basketball team was a combined 55-1 the last two years (two Class 1A state titles) and they also claimed back-to-back state Class 1A track and field titles.
In team sports over the previous two years, Snake River won an astonishing 98 percent of its games (76-1).
All three will play in the inaugural Wyoming-Nebraska Six-man Shootout all-star game in Arthur, Neb., at the end of the month, and Wille and Stanley will also play in the Wyoming Coaches Association basketball all-star game (Englehart is an alternate).
Only Stanley will continue his athletic career ? he?ll walk on the Boise State track team this year ? while Wille (Northern Arizona) and Englehart (Wyoming) will move on to regular college life.
But the football journey for all three began three summers ago when they prepared for their first year of organized football ? in Class 1A/6-man. Englehart, Stanley and Wille are the three six-man representatives on this year?s South team, as the North and South will play in the 39th annual all-star game on Saturday at Cheney Alumni Field in Casper.
?It?s been really fun to get to know the kids in the upper classes and get to mesh with them and have fun,? Englehart tells the Casper Star-Tribune (http://bit.ly/MhUJdo). ?The best athletes in Wyoming, as far as it goes for football, and it?s fun to hang out with them and get to know who they are what they?re all about.?
There has been an adjustment from the six-man game ? the only game they?ve played ? to the traditional 11-man. Englehart, who has been practicing at defensive back, said he was a little wide-eyed on defense to start the week.
?We had a little bit to learn, but I think we?re all picking it up pretty quick and it?s a lot of fun,? said Stanley, who?s been practicing at wide receiver.
Wille said the adjustment was less from six-man to 11-man and more an adjustment to the overall talent on the squad.
?It?s just the standpoint that everybody here is good,? Wille, a running back, said. ?You have to work for everything you get here and that?s what makes it fun.?
